The Polyurea process produces an elastomer coating that is extremely durable, and cures within seconds, allowing fish to be introduced to the pond the very same day that the pond is sprayed.
The Polyurea coating also boasts incredible puncture resistance with a 700% elongation factor. Polyurea can be applied as a coating to a concrete/gunite pond, or it can be applied w/geotextile fabric to a supporting collar against a bare earth excavation, eliminating the need for a gunite crew and reducing the amount of soil removal that would be required to accomodate the 6-9 inches of gunite thickness.
Polyurea resin is comprised of polyether-amines or an amine terminated polyol. This polymer is very reactive and does not require a catalyst. This results in the relatively short set-up time associated with polyureas, one of the major strong points it has in use.
The main issue everyone must understand is that Polyurea by name is not a specific coating system or a specification, it is a description of a polymer TECHNOLOGY. A great technology that boasts so many different formulations and physical property ranges. There are pure polyureas (defined by the PDA) and there are hybrid polyurea systems, each possessing their own characteristics, advantages and disadvantages.
Polyurea cannot solve your protective coating or joint fill needs by itself. It must be specified and installed in combination with proper surface preparation and primers, correct manufacturer’s material formulation, proper equipment, quality control inspection and trained applicators.
